INTRODUCTION

Adelaide has more restaurants per head of population than any other major Australian city, over 70 pubs in the city centre and the largest fresh produce market in the Southern Hemisphere.

HEALTH

South Australia also has the highest proportion of older people in Australia, and projections show that this trend is going to continue. On a per capita basis, health expenditure is above the national average. South Australia also has more medical services, nursing staff and hospital beds per head than the national average.

There are nine public hospitals in metropolitan Adelaide, including seven major teaching hospitals, and 63 hospitals in country regions. There are also 25 private hospitals in the metropolitan area of Adelaide and nine in country regions.

Country South Australia has seven Regional Health Services, providing a different range of services to meet the needs of their local communities. These include hospitals, community health centres and Aboriginal Health clinics and outreach services. All country health services give special attention to addressing the health needs of Indigenous people. The major metropolitan hospitals have Aboriginal Liaison Officers, and community health services have Aboriginal Health Workers. In addition, there are specific health services for Aboriginal communities in country regions.
