INTRODUCTION

Cosmpolitan, theatrical and innumerably hip.

Melbourne is a smorgasbord of a city, rich with superb restaurants, electrifying nightlife and exclusive boutiques. Located on Port Phillip Bay , it is a leafy bayside community, emanating a lifestyle that is suburban, cultivated, conservative and a haven for the avant-garde. It has consequently acquired the reputation of being one of the world's most livable cities. The city centre successfully infuses elegant 19 th century architecture with self-important skyscrapers.

Getting around the city is comparatively simple, given that Melbourne is notoriously flat. There exists a highly effective tram network and bus and train travel is regular and consistent. Melbourne 's public transport system is called the Met, and offers tram, bus and train services on the one ticket. Melbourne Airport services both domestic and international flights, thus local and oversees travel are equally accessible and convenient.

THINGS TO DO

Over the past ten years, the city has undergone a renaissance of sweeping proportions. Chic boutiques have sprung to life and the renowned converges with the eclectic as restaurants and bars crowd the alleys and Victorian era arcades that spill off the main streets. Riverbanks and docklands have morphed into elegant sites for high-class waterside socializing.

Melbourne exudes a passion for art, music, ballet, theatre and football, and there pours a regular plethora of events and festivals to satisfy even the most discernable of cultural or sporting palates. Throughout the year there occurs a consistent buzz of events including the Australian Open Tennis Championship, the Australian Grand Prix, the International Comedy Festival and Melbourne international Film Festival, to name but a select few.

HEALTH

While it occupies only three per cent of the country's land area, approximately 25 per cent of Australia's population lives in Victoria. The state has a strong manufacturing sector and a strong agricultural economy in dairying, crops and wool. The per capita income of Victorians is higher than the national average.

There are 104 public hospitals in Victoria; 31 metropolitan hospitals and 73 regional hospitals. As well, there are a range of state government funded primary health care services in community settings covering areas including nursing, dental health, drug and alcohol services, child and youth health, women's health, mental health and contraceptive advice and education.

There are also 75 private hospitals in Victoria, 56 day procedure centres and 12 bush nursing hospitals.

Victoria has seven Multi Purpose Service centres in rural areas, which allow smaller communities to co-ordinate health services according to their needs.
